DC3 - Fathima Beevi

Fathima Beevi Vadimmal obtained her master's degree in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM), India. During her master’s studies, she cultivated a particular interest in photoredox catalysis and radical-mediated organic transformations under the supervision of Dr Veera Reddy Yatham.

During her master's research at IISER TVM, she worked on the development of visible-light-driven methodologies for the activation of inert chemical bonds and the synthesis of structurally complex organic molecules.

Her research focused on metal-free photochemical radical transformations involving C(sp³)-halogen bond activation, alkene difunctionalization, and dual photoredox-catalyzed carbo-difunctionalization reactions. She also investigated mechanistic aspects of these transformations, including halogen-bonding interactions, single-electron transfer processes, and radical relay pathways. This work resulted in co-authored publications in The Journal of Organic Chemistry and Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry.

Through these projects, she gained extensive experience in reaction development, photochemistry, transition-metal catalysis, and mechanistic investigations. She became proficient in a wide range of analytical and characterization techniques, including NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, LCMS, EPR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry.

Electrochemical Functionalization of Ring Strained Arylcycloalkanes

DC3 will address the electrochemical ring opening of strained cycloalkanes and their further asymmetric functionalization under organocatalytic conditions. The DC will focus on the synergistic combination of asymmetric organocatalysis and electrochemistry to create a new route towards the preparation of optically active compounds of chemical or biological relevance. The DC´s main objective will be the development of strategies merging electrochemistry with aminocatalytic transformations.
